How to Solve Block Link: 4 Beginner Hints (Level 16)

Block Link The JoyPlus Soft Planning Team

Block Link is a one-line puzzle: a single line has to pass through every block. You can always just start dragging and see what happens, but the line gets stuck surprisingly often. It works much better to look at the board first and work out the parts of the line that can only go one way. Let's do that together on one real board from the game, Level 16. Four hints come up along the way, in the order you need them.

The rules

Drag back over your line to undo one block at a time, or double-tap the ring to start over. You can lift your finger and carry on from the end of the line. If you let go when the line has nowhere left to go, the board shakes and starts again from the ring.

Level 16. Twenty blocks, the ring at the bottom left and the star at the top.

One idea makes everything below easier. Every block in the middle of the line has exactly two links: the line comes in through one neighbour and leaves through another. The ring and the star are the two ends, so they have only one link each. In the pictures, a link we are sure of is drawn as a line between two blocks.

Hint 1: Blocks with only two neighbours

The block to the right of the star touches only two blocks: the star and the block below it. The line has to use both. That also gives the star its one link, so the star is done.

A block with only two neighbours has no choice. Its two links are the line's way in and its way out, so you can draw both right away. Blocks in corners and next to holes are the usual places to find them.

The same goes for every block marked here. Each one had only two neighbours from the start.

Hint 2: The ring and the star need only one link

The white ring has a single neighbour, the block to its right, so the line leaves that way. That block already had a link going down, so now it is full.

If the ring or the star has just one neighbour, that link is certain. Keep an eye on the star in particular: the line only touches it at the very end, so once the star has its link, no other block can connect to it.

Hint 3: A full block shuts its other doors

Look at the block above the one next to the ring. Its neighbour below is full and there is no block to its left, so only up and right are left. Both are certain.

A block with two links is full, and the line can never enter it again from another side. So every time you finish a block, check its neighbours. One of them may have just dropped to two ways, and then Hint 1 works on it.

Hint 4: Do not join the ring and the star too early

The line coming from the star now ends here, and the line coming from the ring ends right below it. Joining them would finish the line with the six blocks on the right still empty, so that link is out (red X).

The ring's part of the line and the star's part may only meet once every block is on the line. The same thinking stops loops: if both ends of one piece of line sit next to each other, joining them would close a ring that never reaches the rest of the board.

The rest is Hint 1

13. The star line can now only go right.

14. The block below can only go right too, and all the pieces join into one line.

Solved: one line from the ring to the star through all 20 blocks.

Now draw it

With the whole route worked out, drag from the ring and simply follow it. On bigger boards you will not always see the whole route first, and that is fine. Work out what you can, draw that far, and look again. If you are stuck, the light bulb shows the first few blocks of a working route.

Level 16 has only one possible route, which is why every step above could be worked out. Most later levels have several, so there comes a point where the hints stop and you simply choose a way. That is the topic of the next guide.

Habits that help

  1. Look before you drag. Find the blocks with only two neighbours first.
  2. Remember the counts: two links for every block, one for the ring and one for the star.
  3. After every certain link, check the blocks next to it (Hint 3).
  4. Never cut the board into two parts, and never join the ring and the star before the end (Hint 4).
  5. Save a way into the star for last. The line may not pass through the star on its way somewhere else.
